How fast is the SlipStream
Accelerator? Some of the recommendations in this FAQ are intended for advanced computer users. If you have questions, please call us.
How fast is the SlipStream Accelerator? The SlipStream Accelerator significantly speeds up web page access, up to six times a performance improvement over standard dialup. To achieve this speed up, proprietary lossless compression is applied to text, html, xml, JavaScript and style sheets. Proprietary image compression is applied to gif images, jpeg images and Flash content. The Accelerator also accelerates email traffic (POP3 and SMTP) using lossless compression. The Accelerator does not speed up file downloads (over FTP or file sharing programs), streaming audio/video and HTTPS (secure web sites). Will I benefit from using the SlipStream Accelerator? If you have a dialup Internet connection, you will experience a significant degree of acceleration using the Accelerator. What web browser can I use with the SlipStream Accelerator? The Internet Explorer v4.0 or later. Netscape v6.0 or later. On Macintosh, Safari v1.0 or later. As a matter of fact, the SlipStream Accelerator works with any web browser that allows you to specify an HTTP proxy. You must set the HTTP proxy host to "localhost" and the port number to "5400". Consult your browser's documentation for additional information. What email programs work with the SlipStream Accelerator? The Accelerator is compatible and works transparently with any POP3/SMTP client, including Outlook Express, Eudora and Netscape Mail. What other features does the SlipStream Accelerator have? In addition to speeding up web and email activity, the SlipStream Accelerator provides Pop-Up Blocking and Banner-Ad Blocking. During installation a dialog appears warning that email acceleration is disabled because another LSP was detected. LSP stands for Layered Service Provider and is a system driver that links into Winsock, the Windows networking protocol, to provide low level access to network data. The dialog is the result of a software conflict with an existing POP/SMTP LSP. Examples of programs using such LSPs are New.net, older versions of Zone Alarm, and the Venturi Accelerator. Web acceleration will still work, but not email acceleration. For email acceleration to work, the conflicting LSP must be uninstalled (or deregistered) and the SlipStream Accelerator re-installed. Often removing the application associated with the conflicting LSP will remove the LSP itself. In some instances, however, the LSP must be explicitly removed. For advanced users, to find and remove an LSP, please see the utility "lspfix" found at www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm. For more information on LSPs, please see After installing the Accelerator, all network access, including ping and traceroute, is lost. The problem can happen if the LSP chain is broken or if a conflicting LSP is installed. The best course is to completely deregister all LSPs. The side-effect for the Accelerator is that email acceleration will not work (although web acceleration will work fine). For applications having installed an LSP, their side-effect may be to not work. To deregister all LSPs 1. Open a command prompt. The SlipStream Accelerator detected another application using the HTTP listening port. The default HTTP listening port for the Accelerator is 127.0.0.1:5400. This error indicates 1) that a different application is using the listening port; or 2) the LSP chain is damaged. In case of the former, redirect the port number to a different port (eg. 5400, 5500 or 5600) by changing the setting for Local Listening Port in the connection settings. For info on changing this setting, please see the User Guide. If this does not solve the problem, the LSP chain could be damaged. To correct this, deregister all LSPs as described above. When the Accelerator starts a dialog appears warning that another application is using port 25 or port 110. Email acceleration consists of two components working in tandem: 1. A Winsock component called an “LSP” listening to traffic destined for TCP ports 25 and 110 and forwarding it on to 127.0.0.1:25 and 127.0.0.1:110, respectively. 2. The Accelerator client listening on 127.0.0.1:25 and 127.0.0.1:110 and receiving the redirected traffic. The warning message is complaining that another application on the computer is listening to 127.0.0.1:25 or 127.0.0.1:110. Examples of applications that listen on these ports are old versions of Norton AntiVirus (2001 and earlier), PC-cillin, and some Hotmail-to-POP proxy programs. Advanced users may be running their own SMTP or POP3 servers, which would also cause the conflict. To check if port 25 or 110 are in use, run "netstat -an" from the command prompt. To find what application is listening on the ports, download and run the program "TCPView" available at www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/tcpview.shtml. To solve the problem, disable the application listening on the specified port(s). Please note that this error is not fatal and failure to not disable will result in email acceleration not working, although web acceleration should work fine. The Accelerator does not start due to an installation or configuration problem. This can occur due to an incomplete installation or a file required by the Accelerator being deleted. Uninstall and re-install the Accelerator. For info on uninstalling and installing, please see the User Guide. The SlipStream Accelerator was unable to load the sdicore.dll library. The file may be damaged or deleted. Uninstall and re-install the Accelerator. For info on uninstalling and installing, please see the User Guide. The Slipstream Accelerator was unable to connect to the server. Please verify that you 1) have notified Green Apple that you are using Accelerated Dialup; 2) have entered your Green Apple username and password correctly into the SlipStream Accelerator settings; 3) have connected to the Internet; 4) have entered a rule to allow access to the Accelerator server IP and port through your firewall (if you are running a firewall). The error may also be a result of having insufficient system resources. Diagnostics Tests of the Accelerator may help identify the problem. To run the Tests, go to the Accelerator interface menu >> Help >> Diagnostic Tests. The SlipStream Accelerator could not be started due to an authentication timeout. Ensure that your username and password are correct. If the problem persists, please contact Green Apple. The Slipstream Accelerator cannot be started due to an internal error. Try restarting SlipStream Web Accelerator by exiting the program and then re-launching it. If the problem persists, please contact Green Apple. Unable to connect to the remote service because the database file could not be accessed or created. This error occurs in Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 and Windows XP. Users that do not have administrative rights cannot use the Accelerator if the installation directory is not writable for them. The file “sdi.db” in this directory has to be accessed and edited constantly. To solve, change the permissions on the installation directory to allow the appropriate users to create and modify files. The file “sdi.db” is stored in C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data to prevent this problem from happening. Why can't I right-click on an image to get the original image? The right-click feature only works in Internet Explorer. If you are running Internet Explorer and it is still not working, some websites disable the right-click using JavaScript or the image might be the background image. In these instances, modify the image quality setting from within the SlipStream Accelerator interface, setting the quality to "Full Quality", and refresh the page. For info on changing the setting, please see the User Guide. Why can’t I load a specific website when the Accelerator is enabled? The website may be blocked by the Pop-up Blocker component of the Accelerator. Try disabling the "Block Floating Flash-ads” option in the Pop-up Blocker. If problem persists, add the website to the Pop-up Blocker "White List". Alternatively, you can add the website to the Proxy Exclusion list. For more info, please see the User Guide. Why do some Java applets not work? Older versions of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) cannot display certain image types (such as 'PNG'). To fix this problem, change your image quality setting to "Full Quality". For info on changing the setting, please see the User Guide. The Accelerator closes after double-clicking the icon in the system tray. This occurs on Windows NT and Windows 95 machines. This happens because the popup window is very close to the taskbar. When you click on the icon once, the menu shows and highlights “Exit” as the default option. When you click the icon twice, you exit the application. Why is Netscape/Mozilla not working with the Accelerator? The Accelerator supports Mozilla and Netscape v6.x and later. In the browser, check that the HTTP proxy host is "localhost" and the port number is "5400". If these are set correctly, the problem is due to having multiple versions of the browser installed on the computer and only a complete uninstall will fix it. -- WARNING: The following is for experts only! The following will remove all personal settings and emails! -- 1. Save a copy of the registry. I am using Netscape/Mozilla and have stopped the Accelerated and now cannot get anywhere on the Web. A Netscape/Mozilla client which ran while the Accelerator was active will have a proxy setting pointing to the Accelerator client and will fail when the Accelerator is stopped. The rule is to exit any open browsers before stopping (and starting) the Accelerator. I upgraded to the latest version of the Accelerator and my Proxy Exclusion list and Pop-Up Blocker "White List" are gone. The Accelerator does not save the white list and proxy exclusion values when upgrading to a newer version. How to interpret the results generated by the Diagnostic Tests. Diagnostics Tests of the Accelerator may help identify problems. To run the Tests, go to the Accelerator interface menu >> Help >> Diagnostic Tests. The results generated by the Diagnostics Tests can be divided into seven sections: System Information, Internet Settings, Registry Information, LSP Information, Branding Information Process Information and Diagnostics Tests.
How do I enable Norton Internet Security 2004 to work with the Accelerator? Norton does not scan on port 5400, which is used by the Accelerator to proxy HTTP traffic. Click on "Options" for Norton Internet Security. Select the "Firewalls" tab. In the HTTP port list, click "add". Enter the Accelerator client local listening port number, 5400. Hit "OK". Norton will now scan traffic passing through the Accelerator. How do I configure AdSubtract Pro to work with the Accelerator? AdSubtract competes with the Accelerator to set the browser proxy settings. Just like the Accelerator client, AdSubtract routes traffic through 127.0.0.1, although on a different port. Thus, both can work together by chaining. Since the Accelerator needs to compress data, it should be the last one posting the request and the first one receiving a response. In other words, it should be the last one in the chain. To receive the proxy settings and retain the proxy settings pushed from the server, the Accelerator and AdSubtract need to be started in particular sequence. 1. Start the Accelerator. The
HTTP proxy settings in IE should be 127.0.0.1:5400. Traffic should be redirected back to 127.0.0.1:5400, where the Accelerator is listening. Both applications should be able to function at the same time. Does the Macintosh client support email acceleration? At this time the Macintosh client only accelerates HTTP traffic. Does the Macintosh client have a popup blocker? Since popup blocking is built into the Safari web browser, the Accelerator client does not implement this functionality. After installing the Accelerator on Mac OS X, why do I have to enter my password whenever I try to add or remove a program from the Applications folder? The permissions on the Applications folder need to be checked, go to Applications >> Utilities >> Disk Utility select your hard drive and hit "Repair Permissions". When done, select File >> Quit. Why doesn't the client automatically launch on Mac OS X? Add the SlipStream Accelerator client to your "Startup Items". Go to Applications >> System Preferences >> Accounts. Click on your login name. Click on the "Startup Items" tab. Click on the plus sign (+). Select the SlipStream Web Accelerator program from the list. Hit "Add". When done, select File >> Quit.
