name: BackOrifice type: Virus, BackDoor host platform: Windows first incidence: 08/15/96 last incidence: 09/05/00 level of incidence: Low damage capacity: High links: McAfee, Norton look for: Unusual computer actions: cd-rom door opening for no reason, screens with unusual text BackOrifice (like its partner, NetBus) is a piece of software which a hacker will use to wrest control of your computer. For the hacker to do this, however, you must first install the program on your PC. As a person would generally not want a hacker to take over their computer, the installation of BackOrifice is usually hidden within the installation process of another program -- making BackOrifice an example of a 'Trojan Horse'-type virus. Most up-to-date virus detection utilities will spot BackOrifice, but the best solution is not to install programs you are not fully confident in. For information on removing BackOrifice using Norton
(Symantec), please see For more information removing BackOrifice, please see
