This document describes how to setup Windows XP for internet connectivity using the built in Dialup networking. This walkthrough was written using the Professional version of XP, although it should be consistent with all versions.

Configuring Windows XP Native Dialer And TCP/IP Stack

Step 1: Setting Up Dial Up Networking

  1. Go to START > CONTROL PANEL or START > SETTINGS > CONTROL PANEL (for classic view)
  2. Double click on the Network Connections Icon, or if asked to choose a category, double click on Network and Internet Connections and then double click on Network Connections.
  3. Go to the FILE pull down menu, select New Connection.. Hit Next.
  4. Select 'Connect to the Internet'. Hit Next.
  5. Select 'Set up my connection manually'. Hit Next.
  6. Select 'Connect using dialup modem'. Hit Next.
  7. Type in 'Green Apple' for ISP name. Hit Next.
  8. Type in Phone number. Depending on your location, use one of the following dial-in numbers:
             Lancaster: 654-2133 (and surrounding areas)
             Columbus: 834-5124

    Hit Next.

  9. Enter your account information. Be careful as it is case sensitive.
       <your Login>
       <your Password>
       <your Password> Confirms password
    [*] Use this account name and password when anyone connects to the internet from this computer
    [*] Make this the default Internet Connection (unless you have another connection you wish to use as default, choose this)
    [ ] Turn on Internet Connection Firewall for this connection (If you have a reason to use a firewall, you would be better off using your own software. For the majority of users, this is not needed. Only turn on if you understand what this does)
    Hit Next.
  10. Check 'Add shortcut to this connection on the desktop'. Hit Finish

Step 2: Setup the Connection Properties

  1. Go to START > SETTINGS > NETWORK CONNECTIONS
  2. Click on the Green Apple Icon with the right mouse button and select 'Properties'.
  3. Hit 'Networking' tab at top.
       Make sure that the Type of Dialup Server is
         'PPP: Windows 95/98/NT4/2000, Internet.'
  4. Under 'The connection uses the following items
       [x] Internet Protocol [TCP/IP]
       [ ] File and Printer Sharing
       [ ] Client for Microsoft Networks
  5. Highlight "Internet Protocol [TCP/IP] Properties"
       Click on the Properties Button
       [x] Obtain an IP address automatically
       [ ] Use the following IP address
       [x] Obtain DNS server addresses automatically
       [ ] Use the following DNS server addresses
  6. Click on the Advanced button
       [x] Use default gateway
       [x] Use IP header compression
  7. Hit 'OK' button.
  8. Hit 'OK' button.

The connection properties are now set and you are ready to attempt a login.

Logging on to Green Apple

Double-click on the Green Apple icon on your desktop. Hit the 'Dial' button. This will dialup to Green Apple.

Once the modems connect, the message 'Verifying user name and password' will appear. If everything has been setup correctly and your login name and password have been entered correctly, the screen will turn into a little icon down near the clock display.

Regarding the Internet Explorer, Windows XP machines will have an icon resembling a blue lowercase letter 'e' that reads 'Internet Explorer'). This is the icon for IE. When connected, double click on this icon to start IE. If there is no such icon on your desktop, check for the application 'Internet Explorer' in 'Start >> Programs', 'Start >> Programs >> Internet Explorer' or 'Start >> Programs >> Accessories >> Internet Tools'.

When you are finished with your Internet session, close all your Internet applications, bring back the status window by double clicking on the Green Apple Icon and hit the "Disconnect' button.
