Configuring Windows NT v4.0 Dialup Networking

This guide describes how to configure Windows NT v4.0 for Internet connectivity. It assumes that Windows NT has been correctly installed on your machine. You might need your Windows NT CD for portions of the configuration process. Also, you will need to be logged in as a member of the Administrator group; and continue to re-login as a member of this group after each restart.

Step 1: Configure Modem

  1. Select 'Start > Setting > Control Panel'
  2. Double click on 'Modem' icon
  3. Highlight the modem you intend to use for dialing the Internet
  4. Hit 'Properties'
       For 'Maximum Speed', select 115200.
       Do not put a checkmark beside 'Only connect at this speed'
    Hit 'OK'
  5. Hit 'Dialing Properties'
  6. Under the section entitled 'How I dial from this location', Fill out as appropriate for your location. Note, for call waiting '*70,' is a prefix that commonly disables this feature.
  7. Hit 'OK'
  8. Hit 'Close'

Step 2: Install TCP/IP

  1. Have Win NT 4.0 cd in cdrom drive; select Start > Setting > Control Panel
  2. Double click on 'Network' icon
  3. Select 'Protocol' tab
  4. If TCP/IP is installed, hit 'Cancel' and go to Step 3
  5. Hit 'Add'
  6. Select 'TCP/IP Protocol'
  7. Hit 'OK'
  8. When asked 'Do you wish to use DHCP?', select 'No'. WinNT will now install TCP/IP software
  9. When installation is complete, if you have a network card installed (e.g.,, an ethernet card) and do not use TCP/IP with it,
  10. Click on the 'Bindings' tab
  11. At 'Show Bindings for:', select 'all protocols'
  12. Double click 'TCP/IP Protocol'
  13. Highlight the network card and hit 'Disable'
  14. Hit 'OK'
  15. You will be asked to restart machine and do so.

Step 3: Install Dialup Networking

  1. Have Win NT 4.0 cd in cdrom drive; close Control Panel if open
  2. Double click on 'My Computer'
  3. Double click on 'Dialup Networking'
  4. If Dialup Networking has been installed skip to Step 4
  5. Hit 'Install'
  6. During installation, Windows NT will identify your modem. If your modem is correctly identified, hit 'OK'; if not, you will need to install it
  7. In the 'Remote Access Setup' window, hit 'Configure'.
  8. For 'Port Usage' select 'Dial out only'. Hit 'OK'
  9. Hit 'Network'
  10. In 'Network Configuration' window, configure as
       Dial out Protocols:
         [ ] NetBeUI
         [X] TCP/IP
         [ ] IPX
    Hit OK
  11. Hit 'Continue'
  12. When installation is complete, you will be asked to restart machine and do so.

Step 4: Configure Dialup Networking

  1. Double click on 'My Computer'; double click on 'Dialup Networking'
  2. If no previous connection has been created then the system will begin asking for setup information. You will want to go to the 'Phonebook Entry' window. To get there, from the 'Dialup Networking' window, hit 'New' or select More > Edit entry and modem properties.
  3. Click on 'Basic' tab in 'Phonebook Entry' window. Enter
       Entry name: Green Apple
       Comment:
       Phone Number: [see below]
       Dial using: <select your modem>
  4. Depending on your location, use one of the following dial-in numbers:
             Lancaster: 654-2133 (and surrounding areas)
             Columbus: 834-5124
  5. Hit 'Configure...'.
  6. In 'Modem Configuration' window,
       Initial speed (bps): 115200
       Hardware Features
         [x] Enable hardware flow control
         [x] Enable modem error control
         [x] Enable modem compression
    Hit 'OK'
  7. Click 'Server' tab. Enter
       Dialup Server type:
         [PPP: Windows NT, Windows 95 Plus, Internet]
       Network protocols
         [x] TCP/IP
         [ ] IPX/SPX compatible
         [ ] NetBEUI
         [x] Enable software compression
         [x] Enable PPP LCP extensions
  8. Hit 'TCP/IP Setting...'. Enter
       [x] Server assigned IP address
       [ ] Specify an IP address
       [x] Server assigned name server addresses
       [ ] Specify name server addresses
       [x] Use IP header compression
       [x] Use default gateway on remote network
    Hit 'OK'
  9. Click 'Script' tab. Enter
       After dialing (login)
         [ ] None
         [ ] Pop up a terminal window
         [x] Run this script
           [Generic login]
  10. Click 'Security' tab. Enter
       Authentication and encryption policy
         [x] Accept any authentication including clear text
         [ ] Accept only encrypted authentication
         [ ] Accept only Microsoft encrypted authentication
    Hit 'OK'
  11. In 'Dialup Networking' window, hit 'Location' button.
       If you need a prefix for dialing out or for disabling call waiting (e.g., *70,), enter it in the 'Prefix' field. Hit OK
  12. In 'Dialup Networking' window, select More > User Preferences.
       Click on 'Dialing' tab and set
         Idle seconds before hanging up: 0
    Hit OK
  13. In 'Dialup Networking' window, select More > Create shortcut to entry and place it on your desktop.
  14. Hit 'Close'
  15. Close 'My Computer'

The connection properties are set; you are ready to log in.

Logging onto Green Apple

Double-click on the shortcut to Green Apple icon that is on your desktop. Type in your login name and password (remember, both login name and password are case sensitive). Leave the Domain field empty. You may put a checkmark in the 'Save password' box. Hit 'Dial'. This will dial up to Green Apple. After the modem connects and your login information is sent and accepted, a window entitled 'Connection Complete' will pop up. Hit 'OK'. You are ready to start using an Internet application such as Netscape Navigator or the Internet Explorer.

When you are finished with your Internet session, close all your Internet applications, double click on the connection icon in lower right, and select 'Hang up'.
