Configuring Windows 95 Native Dialer And TCP/IP Stack

This guide describes how to configure Windows 95 for Internet connectivity. It assumes that Windows95 has been correctly installed on your machine. You will need your Windows95 CD or diskettes handy for portions of the configuration process.

Step 1: Install the Dialup Networking

  1. Have the Windows95 CD in the drive or the diskettes close at hand
  2. Click on START, then SETTINGS, then CONTROL PANEL.
  3. Double-click on ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS.
  4. Click on the WINDOWS SETUP tab.
  5. Click on COMMUNICATIONS, then DETAILS.
  6. Check the checkbox that says DIAL-UP NETWORKING.
  7. Click OK on all the menus back to the Control Panel.
  8. Windows 95 will then install Dialup Networking.

Step 2: Setup TCP/IP

  1. Click on START, then SETTINGS, then CONTROL PANEL.
  2. Double-click on NETWORK.
  3. Look in the box labeled 'The Following Network Components are Installed'. Check to see if you have either "TCP/IP" or "TCP/IP - Dial Up Adapter" already listed in the box only once. If you do, you can skip to Step 3. If there is no listing of "TCP/IP" or it does not have one installed for Dial Up Adapter, proceed.
       Note: A very common bug is to have TCP/IP installed more than once. If you have done this, remove all TCP/IP entries. You remove an entry by highlighting it and hitting the 'Remove' button. Once all TCP/IP entries have been deleted, add a single one.
  4. Click on ADD, then PROTOCOL, and then ADD.
  5. Select MICROSOFT as the manufacturer, then TCP/IP as the protocol.
  6. Click OK on all the menus back to the Control Panel.
  7. Windows 95 will then add TCP/IP.
       Note: You might be asked to provide computer and workgroup names at this point. If so, click on the identification tab at the top of the screen, type in your last name for the computer name, 'workgroup' for workgroup, and 'computer' for computer description. Then hit OK.

Step 3: Create Dialer Icon

  1. Double-click on the MY COMPUTER icon.
  2. Double-click on the DIAL-UP NETWORKING icon.
  3. If no previous connection has been created then the system will go right into then MAKE NEW CONNECTION option, if it does not then double click this option.
  4. In the box at the top type 'Green Apple' in place of the words 'My Connection'. Hit Next.
  5. Depending on your location, use one of the following dial-in numbers:
             Lancaster: 654-2133 (and surrounding areas)
             Columbus: 834-5124
  6. Hit Next.
  7. Hit Finish.

Step 4: Setup the Connection properties

  1. Click on the Green Apple Icon with the right mouse button and select 'Properties'.
  2. Remove checkmark from 'Use country code and area code'.
  3. Hit 'Configure' button.
       Set Maximum Speed to 115200
  4. Hit 'OK' button.
  5. Hit 'Server Type' button.
       Make sure that the Type of Dialup Server is 'PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet...'
  6. Under ADVANCED OPTIONS,
       [ ] Log on to Network
       [x] Enable software compression
       [ ] Require encrypted password
  7. Under ALLOWED NETWORK PROTOCOLS
       [ ] NetBEUI
       [ ] IPX/SPX Compatible Protocol
       [x] TCP/IP
  8. Hit 'TCP/IP Settings...' button.
       [x] Server assigned IP address
       [ ] Specify an IP address
       [x] Server assigned name server addresses
       [ ] Specify name server addresses
       [x] Use IP header compression
       [x] Use default gateway on remote network
  9. Hit 'OK' button.
  10. Hit 'OK' button.
  11. Hit 'OK' button.

The connection properties are now set and you are ready to attempt a login. To make things easier, you might want to create a shortcut for your Green Apple icon and place it on your desktop. To do this, right click on the Green Apple icon and select "create shortcut".

Logging onto Green Apple

Double-click on the Green Apple icon that is in 'My Computer >> Dialup Networking' (or use a shortcut, if you have created one). Type in your login name and password (remember, both login name and password are case sensitive). You may put a checkmark in the 'Save password' box.

If this is your first time connecting, hit 'Dial Properties' button. If you have call waiting and Ameritech is your carrier, put a checkmark beside 'This location has call waiting" and in the box labeled 'To disable it, dial:", put '*70,'.

If you have call waiting and Verizon (GTE) is your carrier, you will need to check with them to find out how you disable call waiting on single call basis (Verizon doesn't seem to have standardized on call waiting disablement feature in this area: some places will use '#70,', others cannot be disabled whatsoever).

On the line labeled 'The phone system at this location uses:', place a dot beside 'Tone dialing' if you have tone dialing feature; otherwise place a dot beside 'Pulse dialing' if you have pulse dialing feature. Hit 'OK'.

Hit 'Connect' button. This will dialup to Green Apple.

Once the modems connect, the message 'Verifying user name and password' will appear. If everything has been setup correctly and your login name and password have been entered correctly, the screen will turn into a status window with the connection speed and a time counter on it (on newer versions of Win95, the status window is automatically minimized) - your connection to the Internet is up and working! You may now minimize the status window and start one of your Internet applications such as Netscape Navigator or the Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Regarding the Internet Explorer, IE, most Win95 installations have an icon on the desktop that looks like a globe and reads 'Internet' or 'Internet Explorer' beneath it. This is the icon for the i.e. When you have connected, double click on this icon to start i.e. If there is no such icon on your desktop, check for the application 'Internet Explorer' in 'Start >> Programs', 'Start >> Programs >> Internet Explorer' or 'Start >> Programs >> Accessories >> Internet Tools'.

When you are finished with your Internet session, close all your Internet applications, bring back the status window and hit 'Disconnect' button.
