| A domain name is the basis of
identity for businesses or groups on the Internet. It is used to refer to a
business or group when sending email or surfing the web. In most instances the
domain name is the last two elements in a web or email address. For example, 'www.greenapple.com'
has the domain name 'greenapple.com'. Other examples of domain names are 'ibm.com',
'yahoo.com' and 'microsoft.com'. Website hosting a domain enables the domain holder to send and receive email addressed with their domain name, brand a website with the domain name, and utilize other important features. This document describes technical aspects of Green Apple's website hosting service. Apache Hosting vs. IIS Hosting Green Apple has two web server platforms available for website hosting, Apache and IIS. By default, websites are hosted on Apache. The table below highlights website hosting characteristics of each platform:
Managing Website Files There are two ways for managing the files which make up your website: FrontPage and FTP.. Using FrontPage
This will connect you directly to your website. When you save a file, it automatically saves on the server. Alternatively, you can develop your web pages off-line and import them. To import, connect to your website as provided in steps above, then select File >> Import. Using FTP If you develop web pages offline (i.e., not using FrontPage), you will need an FTP application to move them onto the server. Ws-FTP and CuteFTP are two popular FTP applications in Windows; Fetch is a popular FTP application in Macintosh. You need to put the website files into the directory 'public_html'. Use the following values to connect to your website with FTP Host: ftp.mydomain.com [use
your domain name] The lead document of your website (that is, the one which is opened first) needs to be called 'default.htm', 'index.htm' or 'index.html'. For info on configuring your email reader to use your domain name, click here.
