Minimum Requirements
  • Hardware: 486 DX2-50, 8Mb RAM, 14.4Kbs modem, 25Mb disk space
  • Software: Windows 3.1, Win32s-Ole V1.15

Installing Trumpet Winsock

When you install Trumpet Winsock, you must have two files: the Trumpet distribution file and a login script for Green Apple, ga_login.cmd.

  1. Copy the zip file or self-extracting archive of Trumpet to the directory in which you wish to install it and unpack it there. (We will assume the directory is called 'C:\TRUMPET')
  2. Copy the file ga_login.cmd to C:\TRUMPET.
  3. Using your favorite editor, add to end of 'PATH' in 'C:\autoexec.bat' the path to Trumpet. For example, if your path is PATH C:\WINDOWS;C:\DOS;C:\UTILS make it PATH C:\WINDOWS;C:\DOS;C:\UTILS;C:\TRUMPET and save.
  4. Re-start you machine.
  5. Start Windows.
  6. Open the Program Group in which you want to place the Trumpet icon.
  7. Select 'File >> New' from Program Manager. Select 'Program Item'.
  8. Enter Description, Command Line and Working Directory for file. For example, assuming Trumpet was installed to C:\TRUMPET, enter:
       Description: Trumpet
       Command Line: C:\TRUMPET\TCPMAN.EXE
       Working Directory: C:\TRUMPET
  9. Hit 'OK' button. An Icon should now appear in program group.

Configuring Trumpet Winsock

  1. Start Windows
  2. Select the Trumpet Icon (if you have made it a Program Item) or the executable file TCPMAN.EXE (which will be in the directory where you installed Trumpet).
  3. With the mouse, choose 'File >> Setup'. The Setup window displays all the important configuration parameters of Winsock (there are other configuration windows, but in general you do not have to bother with them).
  4. Below is the Setup Configuration you will need
       -------------------- TRUMPET WINSOCK SETUP ---------------------

  5. Comments about setup:
Name server/Domain Suffix - While there may be some variation in the values of other Setup parameters, these must be exactly as above. The Name server is 192.168.187.6; the Domain suffix is greenapple.com. Slip port - Should be the COM port of your modem. Baud rate - For 14.4Kbs modem, use 57600; for 28.8Kbs modem or better, user 115200.
  6. When finished with Setup, hit the <OK> button. Trumpet will tell you to exit (File >> Exit) and re-start to load new values, and do so.
  7. Using the mouse select 'Dialer >> setup.cmd'.
  8. Telephone number.
  9. Depending on your location, use one of the following dial-in numbers:
             Lancaster: 654-2133 (and surrounding areas)
             Columbus: 834-5124
  10. Hit Ok.
  11. Enter your user name (i.e. login name)
  12. Enter your password.
Note: Remember, both login name and password are case-sensitive.

Connecting

  1. Select 'Dialer >> ga_login.cmd'. If you do not see 'ga_login.cmd' under 'Dialer' menu, you have not correctly copied the file into the Trumpet directory: see above how to do that.
  2. If the phone, login and password information is correct, the script will dialup, login and start an IP-connection. You will know you have an IP-connection if the message 'PPP Ready' or 'Slip Ready' appears (garbage text may follow, but ignore it).
  3. Once you have connected, minimize Trumpet Winsock (or select <ALT><TAB> and return to Program Manager. If you have installed a Web-browser (e.g., Netscape or Internet Explorer), start it or any other Internet application you may have.
  4. When you are finished with your Internet session, exit all running Internet applications, maximize Trumpet (or select <ALT><TAB> and select 'Dialer >> Bye' to terminate modem connection.
