| Spybot is a freeware program is
used to remove malware and spyware from your computer with as little user
intervention as possible. It contains a database of known spyware/malware
signatures which may need updated as time goes on.
Spybot can be obtained from
www.safer-networking.org, or
from one of the many mirrors. To download, simply point your browser to
www.safer-networking.org, and then click on the download link found off to the
left side of the page.

Once you have clicked on the appropriate
download link, you will be taken to a list of mirrors where you can download
the program. You will most likely need to scroll to the bottom of the page to
find this. You want to choose one that specifies English, and one that
mentions a direct download. This makes this step a bit easier. If you do not
see direct download, your best bet is simply to hit the refresh button on your
browser. Once you see something similar, at least similar to what is indicated
by the red box, click on the button. If you are having real trouble finding
this, the current version of spybot can also be found by simply clicking on
the link below.

Spybot

Once you click the link, you should receive a
dialog box that asks you if you would like to save, or open. You will want to
click Open.

Spybot will then download, and you should see a
box with a status bar moving along. Once it has finished, the program will
automatically open. This could take quite some time depending on the speed of
your connection.

Installing Spybot
After the download has completed, a screen such
as the one below will appear. Click on the Next Button.

The next screen will look similar to the one
below. Make sure you click on the radio button that says "I Accept the
Agreement" before clicking on the Next button. This screen presents the EULA
(End User License Agreement). You may wish to read through this agreement
before clicking on the next button to continue.

The next screen, seen below, will allow you to
change the default installation path for Spybot. If you have no idea what this
means, just simply click next to continue.

The next screen presents more configuration
options. If you are setting this up for someone who is visually impaired, you
may select the checkbox that is empty to add icons appropriate for such
individuals. If this does not apply to you, simply hit the Next button to
continue.

The next screen, presented below, asks where to
place shortcuts to the program within your start menu. If you are uncertain
what this will do, simply click on the Next button.

The next screen you encounter is one in which
the default options are usually all right for most individuals. If you rather
like to have a clean looking desktop with few icons, you may want to uncheck
the box "Create Desktop Icons", however this is generally not advised as it
makes it easier to get to Spybot if you leave this checked. Click the Next
button to continue.

The next screen you are then presented with is
to confirm the options you have selected. It should be perfectly fine, to
click Install to continue on with the installation.

The following screen you see should have a
scrolling textbar which moves from left to right while Spybot installs itself
to your computer.

Eventually, the screen below should show up,
indicating that Spybot has installed itself. Click the finish button here.
Spybot should now be installed.

Updating Spybot
Now that Spybot is installed, the definitions
must first be updated. For the first running of Spybot, you must be connected
to the internet as Spybot will need to update its Spyware/Malware definitions.
Make sure your connected to the internet before continuing. Once you are
connected look for the icon for Spybot search and destroy on your Desktop. It
should look like the following icon below. Double click on it.

Upon running Spybot for the first time, a
window will appear that prompts you to select a language.

After choosing a language, you will be given a
box which indicates that you may lose the functionality of some programs if
using this program to remove spyware. This is referring to programs like Kazaa
or WeatherBug which require spyware to be present in order to run these
particular programs. If you use programs such as those, you may continue but
proceed with caution, or you may not want to run Spybot at all. Click OK in
order to continue.

After clicking OK, the main screen will appear.
The first thing we want to do, is make sure we have updated definitions. To do
this, click on the Search for updates button.

Once search for
updates is clicked, Spybot will look for updates to the program. This could
take a few seconds. You should eventually see a screen like the one below. The
updates that are suggested will already be checked, so the best course of
action is simply to hit the Download Updates button.

Once the Download Updates button is clicked you
should see a screen like the one below which has a moving status bar, seen
here in blue, simply wait while this bar moves from left to right indicating
that the program updates are being downloaded. This can go rather fast if you
have a broadband connection.

Running Spybot
Once the updating process has completed the
screen should look something like the one below. All updated components will
have green checkmarks beside them much like the one you see below. It is now
time to scan your machine for malware/spyware. To do so click on the "Search &
Destroy" Button.

On the following screen, click "Check for
Problems" to begin the scan.

After clicking this button, the screen should
look much like the one below. You will notice the blue status bar moving along
the screen as the process completes. The numbers off to the left hand side
also increase as the process continues. This process may take some time.

Once the scan has finished, you will notice a
lot of items found. In this case there were only two. Scroll down the list and
check to make sure each box is checked. Once you are certain of this, click on
the "Fix Selected Problems" button. If you want the description of the
particular malware component, you can highlight the item and hit the
"Description of this Product".

Upon clicking on the "Fix Selected Problems
button" you will receive a box like the following. Click the Yes button.

Once the confirmation box disappears, Spybot
will start cleaning off the components. You will see the blue status bar
moving from left to right once more indicating that the program is cleaning
off spyware/malware.

Eventually, you should see a screen like the
one below. All of the malware components should have a green check mark next
to them. It is possible, however, that you might receive a dialog box that
mentions that Spybot could not remove all components, would you like allow it
to run next time on startup? If this appears, go ahead and let it do this. If
Spybot finds nothing the next time it runs, you should be OK.

You can follow the steps again to
scan more than one once just to be safe. It is good to upgrade your
definitions at least once a week and then run spybot after each update. Click
the X to exit Spybot. Reboot your machine if Spybot said it needed to run
again.
