| This guide describes how to
configure the Internet Connection Wizard, ICW, which comes with the Internet
Explorer version 5.x. Internet Explorer v5.x is pre-installed in Windows 2000,
Windows ME, and Windows 98 Second Edition. It may be installed manually in
Windows 95, Windows 98 First Edition, and Windows NT4. ICW is an automated
process which leads a user through creating a Dialup Connection and
configuring their email. Configuring the Internet Connection Wizard v5.x 0. Start up 'Internet Connection Wizard'
I. Internet Connection Wizard
II. Set Up Your Internet Connection
III. Phone Number
IV. User Name & Password
V. Dialup Connection Name
VI. Set Up Your Internet Mail Account
VII. Complete Configuration
If your computer has not been configured for Internet access previously, the 'Connect to the Internet' icon on the desktop should be replaced by an 'Internet' icon when the 'Microsoft Internet Configuration Wizard' completes. An icon for Outlook Express might also appear on the desktop after the setup. If you already had an previous version of Internet Explorer installed previous to this update, the 'Connect to the Internet' icon will just disappear. The 'Microsoft Internet Configuration Wizard' can be invoked at a later time by following the sequence Start >> Programs >> Internet Explorer >> Connection Wizard. The connection properties are now set and you are ready to attempt a login. To make things easier, you might want to create a shortcut for your Green Apple icon and place it on your desktop. To do this, right click on the Green Apple icon and select "create shortcut". Logging onto Green Apple Double-click on the Green Apple icon that is in 'My Computer >> Dialup Networking' or 'Start >> Settings >> Dialup Networking' (or use a shortcut, if you have created one). Type in your login name and password (remember, both login name and password are case sensitive). You may put a checkmark in the 'Save password' box. If this is your first time connecting, hit 'Dial Properties' button. If you have call waiting and Ameritech is your carrier, put a checkmark beside 'This location has call waiting' and in the box labeled 'To disable it, dial:', put '*70,'. If you have call waiting and Verizon (GTE) is your carrier, you will need to check with them to find out how you disable call waiting on single call basis (Verizon doesn't seem to have standardized on call waiting disablement feature in this area: some places will use '#70,', others cannot be disabled whatsoever). On the line labeled 'The phone system at this location uses:', place a dot beside 'Tone dialing' if you have tone dialing feature; otherwise place a dot beside 'Pulse dialing' if you have pulse dialing feature. Hit 'OK'. If you find that the 'Dial Properties' button is grayed out, hit the 'Properties' button below and check 'Use area code and dialing properties'. Hit 'Connect' button. This will dialup to Green Apple. Once the modems connect, the message 'Verifying user name and password' will appear. If everything has been setup correctly and your login name and password have been entered correctly, the dial window will minimize and an icon will appear on the start bar near the clock. Your connection to the Internet is up and working! You may now start one of your Internet applications such as Netscape Navigator or the Microsoft Internet Explorer. Your Internet connection is monitored via the status window, which you'll find in the lower right hand corner of your screen near the clock. Double clicking the status icon (two computers with green monitors) brings up your connection window with information regarding your connection speed, connection duration, and an option to disconnect. You can hide this window (return it to the system tray) by clicking it's minimize button. When you are finished with your Internet session, close all your Internet applications, bring back the status window and hit the 'Disconnect' button. Useful Web Pages |
