HTML and HTTP

A homepage is a file written in HTML (hyper-text markup language), a display programming language. Homepages are interpreted and viewed through web browsers such as Netscape Navigator and the Internet Explorer from Microsoft. It is the sum collection of web pages that make up the World Wide Web we all know and love.

In order for a homepage to be accessible to people on the Internet it must be located on a server which is connected to the Internet and can speak HTTP (hyper-text transfer protocol). HTTP is the protocol the controls the interaction between a web browser and the machine on which an html document is located.

Creating A Homepage

With your account you can place a homepage on the web. You do this by writing the html document (or documents) and then moving it to a specific directory in your account on Green Apple's system.

When composing your homepage please bear in mind that it (plus any supplemental documents and images) should not exceed the 25MB allotted to your account. The content of homepages may contain any matter, including marketing and commercial related information, you chose provided that is not unlawful, illicit or protected by copyright. For more information, please see our Usage Agreement.

Learning about HTML

  • By Example.

The html code used to create any web document is easy to find. Just go to that web document and view its source:

  • Netscape v1.x: select View >> Source
  • Netscape v2.x, v3.x: select View >> Document Source
  • Netscape v4.x: select View >> Page Source
  • IE v2x, v3.x, v4.x, v5.x: select View >> Source

You may also save the html code by choosing File >> Save As and saving the 'html' form of the homepage you are on.

  • Using an HTML Editor.

There are many html creator apps. Some of the more popular ones are Netscape Navigator Gold, Microsoft FrontPage, Hotdog, and WebEditor. You will be able to find these HTML editors and others at many popular shareware sites, such as: http://www.shareware.com or http://tucows.greenapple.com

Installing Homepage On Green Apple

  1. Move html docs and pictures to your Green Apple account and put them into a directory called 'public_html' (the directory should already exist in your account). To move the files over to your Green Apple account, you will need an FTP (file transfer protocol) application, some popular ones are Windows/Win95/98: Ws-Ftp and CuteFTP; Macintosh: Fetch. You can find write-ups on these programs here.
  2. Rename the homepage, your main html page, to default.htm or index.htm. The homepage specifically refers to lead html document in a set of html documents: it is the one you want people to view first. Most FTP applications have the capability to rename files on the remote (i.e. Green Apple) side. All the applications mentioned above can.
  3. When you are done writing your homepages and have moved them into your Green Apple account, send email to 'subscribers@greenapple.com' letting Green Apple know that your website is ready. Be sure to provide in this message the name your want for your pages as displayed on Green Apple's Subscriber List.

If everything has gone correctly, you can view your homepage at: http://www.greenapple.com/~<your login>
