Microsoft FrontPage Express allows you to create complicated, artistic, and organized web pages without having to learn about HTML, Java, and any other language or program that would be required to set up the web page of your choice. The process is very simple. You just simply type and FrontPage creates the HTML code. This allows you to get started on designing the web page of your dreams very easily. It offers many different preformatted website designs to use to help you get started.

Many users already have FrontPage Express on there computer. You must have a version of Internet Explorer newer than 4.x in order to run the program. If you do not have the program on your computer, you can download it from Microsoft.

Getting Started

This documents will just cover the basics of the program as there is much to making a web page and it would be nearly impossible to document everything that you could do to your page in a small, compact document. Hopefully this should give you most of the basics and enough to get you started.

To use FrontPage Express, click on File > New > Page from the pull down menu list, you will then be presented with many choices about how you want your web page to look like. Click on your choice then press OK. After this you will be presented with a blank page. If you want to edit an existing file that is already on your computer or that you can get online click on File > Open and select the file or type in the website. To save any current web page that you are working on click on File > Save then type in the file name for which you have chosen for your page then press OK.

You can upload your web page onto the Internet using FrontPage by clicking on File > Save As  then type in the site that you want to upload it to in the Page Location box. Click OK. It will then ask you for your user name and password. Type these in and it will upload the page you have just created. For example, to save the file main.html into my personal directory, I would tell FrontPage Express to save the file with the name "main.html" into the folder http://www.greenapple.com/~myusername with the username of "myusername" and my correct password. FrontPage will then upload the file. Now, in order for this to work, you will need to be connected online.

Generally, using FrontPage to create the html documents and a stand alone FTP program such as CuteFTP, or WSFtp to transfer the files to the remote server will be easier for most people as you gain more control over your files and directories.

Using FrontPage Express

When starting up FrontPage you have the opportunity to edit the HTML code by yourself by clicking the HTML button on the lower left hand corner of the window. This can allow you to change options that you know how to do without using FrontPage Express. It also allows you to preview you web page to make sure that any pictures you might have put on you page work and any links to other web sties on the Internet function properly. This allows you to work any bugs out of you web page before you upload it onto the Internet for other people to view.

You can also change the font type, size, and color of any text that you use on your website by going to Format > Font there, you can choose what size, color, and type of font you want this same thing can be done to the background of your website by clicking Format > Background there you can choose what color and what image, if any you want to put on there.

If you find a website that you would like to go to or want other people who view your website to see the website you just found, type in a word and/or phrase, highlight it by left clicking on the mouse and dragging it across the text. Then go to Insert > Hyperlink a screen will come up asking you for the URL you wish to create the hyperlink for. Type in the website and choose OK. When your site is uploaded people will be able to click on the text or picture you used for you link to the website and actually go to that website.

You can add pictures and other images using the pull down menu list entitled Insert > Picture. This allows you to make your website even more enjoyable for other people who want to view it. You can also add videos by doing this as well by substituting Video in for Picture. Pictures can make a website become much more advanced for a number of reasons.

You can add many other things to your personalized website by clicking on the Insert button located on the top of the window, and looking around. There are so many options and add-ons that you can do to your web page to make it look better than it ever had before. After you have completed your web page you can upload it onto the internet using an FTP client and it can be viewed by people across the world.

A Few Reminders About Building a Website

  1. Always name that first page that you want to come up index.htm. You can do this while saving, when it asks for the name type index. Your website will not come up like you want it to if you do not do this.
  2. Things may not work the first time that it is uploaded onto the internet, don't panic. Double check your links, filename and file cases in order to make sure your problem isn't a simple mistake.
  3. Building a website is not a simple thing for a beginner, It would be advised to check the web for material that will help you get started before you dig in. That way you have a good idea where to start. But, if you still don't know where to start and are running into problems, contact our office and we will be happy to help you.
