Configuring Microsoft Internet Explorer TCP/IP Stack and Dialer

Internet Explorer V2.x as distributed in the file 'dlbase.exe' contains a freeware protocol stack and dialer from Microsoft (in addition to including the application 'The Internet Explorer')

The following write-up describes how to install and configure the file 'dlbase.exe' for Windows. It assumes this file exists on a diskette prior to installation process.

Installing dlbase.exe

  1. Put the disc with "dlbase.exe" in your drive.
  2. Copy the file from the diskette to a directory on your machine. It is best to create a temp directory for this.
  3. Run the file "dlbase.exe" to extract the needed files.
  4. From Windows, run the file "setup.exe" that was created.
  5. Follow the steps to install the "Microsoft Internet Explorer" program group in windows.
  6. You should have an "Internet Explorer", "Read Me" and "Make new connection" icons.

Configuring the TCP/IP stack and dialer

  1. From the "Microsoft Internet Explorer" group, double-click on the "Make new connection" icon.
  2. Type in the name "Green Apple" and hit the "OK" button.
  3. Select the "Microsoft Internet Explorer" program group as the destination and hit the "OK" button.
  4. Type in your user name (login name) and password in the spaces provided. These would have been assigned when the account was set-up.
  5. Depending on your location, use one of the following dial-in numbers:
             Lancaster: 654-2133 (and surrounding areas)
             Columbus: 834-5124
  6. Hit the "property" button at bottom of the screen.
  7. Remove the x from "Start Internet Explorer.."
  8. Remove the x from "Minimize connection.."
  9. Hit the "modem" tab at the top.
  10. Set the maximum speed to 57600 if you have a 14.4Kbs modem; set to 115200 if you have a 28.8Kbs modem or better.
  11. Hit the "domain name" tab at the top. Enter:
      Domain name: greenapple.com
      Primary DNS: 192.168.187.6
      Secondary DNS: 192.168.187.4
  12. Hit the "OK" button at the bottom.
  13. Hit the "close" button.
  14. Answer "Yes" to save changes.

Connecting to Green Apple

  1. Double-click on the "Green Apple" icon.
  2. Enter your user name (i.e. login name) and password into fields.
  3. Hit the "connect" button at the bottom. The modem will now dialup.
  4. When the modem connects, the system will verify your user name and password. If everything is correct, the connection window changes to a status window indicating a connection speed and timer.
  5. Minimize the status window by hitting the down arrow in the top right-hand corner.

You are now ready to run the Internet Explorer or any other Internet software you may have.

When you are finished with your Internet session, close all your Internet applications, maximize the status window and hit the 'Disconnect' button.
