| CuteFTP is an FTP (File Transfer
Protocol) application written for Windows platforms. FTP (File Transfer
Protocol) is used to transfer files between your computer and remote ones. It
is used for most frequently for moving web pages from onto web servers which
then publish them onto the web.
Configuring CuteFTP v4.x
The main display of CuteFTP is divided into two
windows. The first window is the actual window you will view when using
CuteFTP; the second window is called the Site Manager. The Site Manager is an
area where you can save your FTP sessions for later and make things a little
easier for you. To add a site:
- Click on the 'New' button
- Enter the name you wish to use for the
listing in the Site Manager
Label : Green Apple (for example)
FTP Host Address : ftp.greenapple.com
FTP Site User ID : <your login>
FTP Site Password : <your password>
FTP Site Port : 21
Login Type
[x] Normal
[ ] Anonymous
[ ] Double
Entering a User ID/Password will always set Login to Normal
- When all the items have been entered, hit
CONNECT.
- The Site Manager will now close and you will
connect to your ftp site.
Using CuteFTP To Transfer HTML Files
- Connect to Green Apple and Start CuteFTP.
- Highlight the site 'Green Apple' you created.
Click 'Connect'. If later you wish to edit to the site entry, just edit the
entry boxes on the Site Manager screen
- A welcome message appears. Hit OK.
- At this point you are at the main CuteFTP
screen. This screen is divided into four sections: 1) Upper window, the
activity log; 2) Middle Left window, window onto your (i.e. local) hard
drive; 3) Middle Right window, window on your account at Green Apple (i.e.
remote); 4) Bottom window, the queue window.
- The middle left window will show the contents
of the CuteFTP directory by default. The top of the window indicates the
directory and drive you are currently in. Next this is a folder icon with an
arrow, which moves you up one level at a time within your local hard drive.
Files are displayed in this left window. The lower right window holds the
files and directories of the server.
- To upload files:
- Highlight file to upload in local (left)
side
- Drag file to remote (right) side and drop it
there
- The prompt will ask you 'Upload Selected
File?'. Hit OK if the file name checks out
- The file is copied to the remote side.
Note: If you are moving over HTML files, you need to switch to
the directory 'public_html'. To do this, find the directory 'public_html' on
the remote side of the screen says and double click on it. This changes you
to that directory.
- If everything is correct, when the file is
being transferred, across the top of CuteFTP, text will appear reading
something like, 'opening binary connection to:' and 'uploading file...' This
indicate that your files are uploading./li>
- To download files:
- Highlight the file(s) on the remote (right)
side you wish to transfer
- Drag file to local (left) side and drop it
there
- The prompt will ask you 'Download Selected
File?'. Hit OK
- The file is copied to the local side.
To exit CuteFTP, select File >> Quit or select
Ctrl+Q or just click the close button on the top of the window (marked 'X').
