Configuring Internet Explorer

Start Homepage

1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. Select Tools >> Internet Options >> General tab.
     Where it reads 'You can change which page to use for your home page', enter:
       Address: http://www.greenapple.com
3. Hit Apply. Hit OK.

Autodial

Internet Explorer 5.5x allows the computer to automatically dial and login to an Internet account when launched. These steps assume a dial-in connection icon "Shortcut to Green Apple" has already been created (located on the desktop or the path My Computer >> Dialup Networking).

1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. Select Tools >> Internet Options >> Connections tab.
3. Choose: [x] Always dial my default connection
4. In "Dialup settings" window, highlight the connection you wish to dial, click the "Set Default" button
5. Remove the checkmark from "Perform system security check before dialing"
6. Click the "Settings" button
7. If applicable, remove the checkmarks from: "Automatically detect settings" "Use automatic configuration script"
8. Under the "Dialup Settings" field, enter the user name and password. Leave "Domain" field blank.
9. If applicable, remove the checkmark from: "Do not allow Internet programs to use this connection"
10. Hit OK. Hit Apply. Hit OK.

Access to Other Applications

Internet Explorer 5.5x offers an easy interface for sending Internet documents or hyperlinks to other Internet applications. While the default settings from a new installation of Internet Explorer 5.5x are acceptable for a majority of customers, some may wish to use non-Microsoft clients for Email and Usenet (e.g., Eudora or Forte Agent). To configure Internet Explorer 5.x to recognize third-party software:

1. Select Tools >> Internet Options >> Programs tab.
2. Select the existing application desired from the drop-down menus for each specified category. If an application field is blank, or if the desired software is not listed as available, then the helper application will need to be re-installed.
3. Hit Apply. Hit OK.

Using Internet Explorer

The Internet Explorer display is divided into six regions. From top to bottom they are: a row of pull-down menus, the toolbars (Navigation, Address, and Links) the HTML viewer, and the Status bar.

To go to a known site, enter the web-address (a.k.a. the Universal Resource Locator, the URL) on the Address line. Most web addresses begin with 'http://' (e.g., http://www.yahoo.com); this may be omitted however as Internet Explorer will imply it (e.g., yahoo.com). Internet Explorer also uses 'Auto Complete' and will suggest frequently used URLs by displaying matching addresses in its history file through a drop-down menu. To hide or show the Address line, select View > Toolbars > Address Bar and remove or add the checkmark.

The HTML viewer fills the majority of the Internet Explorer display. It is here that homepages are displayed. Within a given homepage often appear images and underscored text. When you click on a link, the web page to which that link points will then be retrieved and displayed.

The Status Bar at bottom will indicate the percentage of downloading that is complete when retrieving a web page. To hide or show the Status Bar remove or add the checkmark at View >> Status Bar.

The Navigation toolbar is the strip of buttons starting on left with a 'Back' arrow and ending on right with 'Edit'. All the buttons on the toolbar have an equivalent in a pull-down menu. To hide the toolbar, remove checkmark from View >> Toolbars >> Standard buttons.

A special region that may be opened within the HTML viewer is the Explorer Bar. The Explorer Bar helps manage features of the browser, like searches, favorites, and the history. Typically the Explorer Bar is opened to the left of the current page. To open the Explorer Bar, select one of the icons that appear for it on the toolbar or select View >> Explore Bar and choosing which Explorer Bar you want opened. To hide the Explorer Bar, select View >> Explorer bar >> and remove any checked instances.

Pull-down Menu Items

Across the top of Internet Explorer is a row of pull-down menus starting with 'File' on the left and ending with 'Help' on the right. Below are descriptions of the more important menu selections:
