| Microsoft Internet Explorer, IE,
version 4.x introduces many new features over version 3.x of this product.
Among the most notable of these are Channels and Subscriptions, which allow
users to have web pages automatically delivered to their desktops and updated
periodically the Explorer Bar which adds a new way to view lists of links; a
high level of integration of IE with other Microsoft Internet Products for
email, news and conferencing; and a broad integration of IE into Windows95
through the 'Active Desktop'.
The following write-up was written using version 4.01 of IE and, unless noted, has shown to be applicable to other v4.x releases. It assumes that IE v4.x has been installed correctly. For more information about IE v4.x than is provided here, please see its help menu. Configuring Internet Explorer Setting Homepage

Using Internet Explorer The Internet Explorer display is divided into six regions. From top to bottom they are: a row of pull-down menus, the toolbar, the Address line, the Links line, the HTML viewer, and the Status bar. To go to a known site, enter the web-address (a.k.a. the URL, Universal Resource Locator) on the Address line. Most web addresses begin with 'http://' (e.g., http://www.yahoo.com); this may be omitted however as IE will imply it (e.g., www.yahoo.com). IE also uses 'Auto Complete' and will attempt to finish frequently used URLs by matching them against addresses in its history. To hide or show the Address line, select View >> Toolbar >> Address Bar and remove or add the checkmark. Below the Address line, is the Links line. By default, this row of buttons link to different homepages on Microsoft's website. To create your own link to add to the Link line, drag the address from the Address line onto the Link line. The HTML viewer fills the majority of the IE display. It is here that homepages are displayed. Within a given homepage often appear images and underscored text. These are links to other websites; such links are called hyperlinks. When you click on a link, the web page to which that link points will then be retrieved and displayed. When IE is downloading (i.e. retrieving a homepage or a file), a comet will fly around the letter 'e' located in the upper right corner. Also the Status Bar at bottom will indicate percentage of downloading that is complete. To hide or show the Status Bar remove or add the checkmark at View >> Status Bar. The Navigation toolbar is the strip of buttons starting on left with a 'Back' arrow and ending on right with 'Mail'. All the buttons on the toolbar have an equivalent in a pull-down menu. To hide the toolbar, remove checkmark from View >> Toolbar >> Standard buttons. A special region that may be opened within the HTML viewer is the Explorer Bar. The Explorer Bar is made up of a different HTML pages used to help with searching the Internet, managing your Favorites, viewing your browsing history, and viewing channels. Typically the Exrplorer Bar is opened to the left of the current page. To open the Explorer Bar, select one of the cons that appear for it on the toolbar or select View >> Explore Bar and choosing which Explorer Bar you want opened. To hide the Explorer Bar, select View >> Explorer bar >> None. Pull-down Menu Items Across the top of IE is a row of pull-down menus starting with 'File' on the left and ending with 'Help' on the right. Below are descriptions of the more important menu selections:
Subscriptions Subscriptions are a good way to know what's new on your favorite website without always having to go and look it up. On demand or with specified periodicity, IE checks those sites you have subscribed to for new content. Using subscriptions makes it easier to see if a website you frequently visit has changed and allows for changed sites to be downloaded for viewing immediately or at a later time for viewing offline. Subscriptions work as an extension to favorites. To add your current home page as a subscription, select Favorites >> Add to Favorites. A dialog box will appear which will ask whether you want to subscribe to this page or not. Specifically, you will be asked whether you want to subscribe to this page and are offered to make in response of three possible selections:
Selecting a) adds the page to your Favorites without subscribing to it. Selecting b) will post a notification of a page being changed in the Subscriptions Manager (Favorites >> Manage Subscriptions) when the subscriptions are checked. Selecting c) will post a notification of a page being changed in the Subscriptions Manager and will proceed to download a copy of that page. Subscriptions are managed through the Subscriptions Manager. To start it, select Favorites >> Manage Subscriptions. The Subscriptions Manager lists all your subscriptions and their last update times, status (whether changed or not since last update), next scheduled update time, web address, and schedule periodicity. There are many parameters that may be set to control a particular subscription, to view or modify them, highlight a particular subscription in the Subscriptions Manager and select File >> Properties. Channels Another form of subscribing is through channels. A 'channel' is a website designed to deliver content from the Internet to your computer. Channels are automatically updated on your computer with a schedule specified by the content provider or with one you customize yourself. Look to the Channel Guide for a list of available offerings; it is frequently updated with the latest. In order to view a channel, it is not necessary to subscribe to it, simply select the 'Channel' button on the Navigation toolbar (or select View >> Explorer Bar >> Channels), and highlight the channel you want from the list provided on the left of the screen. See Help >> Contents and Index >> getting the best content >> What is a channel? for more details. |
