Lavasoft Ad-Aware is a program used to remove spyware and malware from your PC. For conventional protection, the free version of Ad-Aware will work. For optimum protection, Ad-Aware comes in a Plus version which can be purchased from the Lavasoft website.

Obtaining Ad-Aware Free Version

Ad-Aware can be obtained from www.lavasoftusa.com, or from one of the many mirrors. To download it simply point your browser to www.lavasoftusa.com, and click on the download link on the left indicated in the image below.

Ad-Aware Main Page

Once you click on the download link, you will see a page similar to the following below. You will want to choose one of the links below to download the software. The networking files link seems to be a direct download, so it is a bit easier to use. The others will take you to another page where you can click to download Ad-Aware.

You will eventually be given the choice below. Click on the Open button.

A box much like the one you see below will appear. The status bar shown corresponds with how much of the program is left to download. This could take some time if you have a dialup connection.

Eventually, you should see the screen below. It basically says that you are about to install Ad-Aware. Click the Next button to continue.

Next, you should be presented with the EULA (End User License Agreement). You may wish to read through this agreement before clicking on the next button to continue.

The next screen, seen below, will allow you to change the default installation path for Ad-Aware. If you have no idea what this means, just simply click next to continue.

Once you click Next, you should see the screen below, which simply exists in order to verify the options you have selected. Click Next to begin installing Ad-Aware.

Verify

There should be a quick installation screen that has a moving scroll bar, eventually you should be presented with a screen like the one below. This screen notes that Ad-Aware is installed. To exit the finished installation click on finish.

Updating Ad-Aware

Once Ad-Aware is installed, take a look at your desktop, and see if you can locate an icon that looks like the one shown below. Double click on it to start Ad-Aware.

The next screen, shown below, is the main screen. We wish to update Ad-Aware's malware/spyware definitions, so click the button shown in the red box (the "Open Web Update" button) in order to bring up the update screen.

Upon clicking on this button, you should be presented with the smaller window below. Click on the "Connect" button to check for new updates.

The screen similar to the one presented below should appear, it simply requires you to click "OK" in order to download the definitions.

Once you hit OK, a status bar seen below, will move from left to right indicating the amount of the definitions currently downloaded. Simply wait until the bar reaches one hundred percent

After the update completes, you should receive a window similar to the following. Click the Finish button in order to continue.

Running Ad-Aware

Once the updates have been installed, it is time to run AdAware. Once you have clicked finish, you should be back at the main screen. Click on the "Scan Now" button to begin scanning your machine.

Upon clicking the "Scan Now" button you should be presented with a window that lists different scan modes. The default settings are generally fine. Click the next button to begin.

AdAware should now bring up a window indicating that it is scanning. It should look familliar to the one below. Any spyware components that it picks up will be listed in red as they are found. The Objects recognized will increase as spyware components are located. Simply wait as Ad-Aware scans your hard drive.

Eventually, you will encounter a screen much like the one below. It should list the number of components that have been detected. Simply click the Next button in order to view what AdAware has discovered.

Upon clicking on next, you should be presented with a list of the components that Ad-Aware has detected. Simply right click on any of them, and then click on the "select all objects" option.

After selecting all the options your screen should look much like the one below. Click on the Next button to instruct Ad-Aware to remove all the components it has found.

Upon clicking on Next, you should be presented with a window that wishes to confirm the removal of the components you have selected. Click OK to remove the selected malware/spyware components.

Upon clicking on this button, Ad-Aware will remove the components, and then will leave you at the main screen. You may now exit Ad-Aware. It is good to run AdAware, at least once a week with updating your definitions before scanning.
