AOL Network Connection v5.x, v6.x written: 03-08-01
last updated: 03-08-01

Customers of Green Apple can enjoy the benefits of an America Online (AOL) account, without compromising the high speed, high availability and versatility gained by using a quality Internet service provider. And they can do this without the expense of long distance fees and receive a discount on their AOL service charges for using their own Internet provider.

This document explains the procedure to setup the AOL user interface to connect to America Online through a standard Green Apple dialup account. This document assumes the reader has a general familiarity with AOL, the AOL user interface and with Windows95/98.

America Online provides a simplified user interface to the Internet which some users find to be helpful and enjoyable. Users of Green Apple can enjoy all the benefits of the simplified AOL user interface, without losing any of the advantages of subscription to an Internet service provider. Advantages including, a direct connection to the Internet which allows maximum versatility and speed, superior online gaming and access to other services which require a direct Internet feed.

Green Apple does not recommend installing the AOL software is it has a tendency to mess up your internet connection through us or other independent providers. If you wish to install the program, MAKE SURE to select NO to this question when asked in the setup process: Would you like this copy of the AOL software to be your default Internet application for Web pages, newsgroups, and email? Selecting yes will most likely damage your internet settings and you will most likely need to reconfigure them to get them working again afterwards.

Getting Started

To access AOL using Green Apple as your Internet Service Provider you will need to acquire a copy of the AOL installation CD or a copy of the program can be downloaded from the America Online web page (www.aol.com). After you have acquired the installation program you need only to install the AOL interface and setup an AOL user account. You do not need to contact Green Apple unless you have specific questions about the installation procedure because your service with us will not be effected.

Before you begin

Before beginning the AOL installation, you will want to establish a dialup networking connection to Green Apple. This will allow you to connect to AOL after you have finished the setup. It is also a good idea to gather all necessary information you will need during the installation before starting the process. For example, you may need a credit card to establish a new account with AOL, you will need your login and password information for Green Apple, etc.

In order to use AOL, you will need to establish service with them. You cannot use your Green Apple account and password with AOL unless you have set it up through them to use the same settings. You will be asked to provide personal and payment info during the setup process. Also be aware that the free hours or such are just that. After the free time, you will be signed up for service and charged unless you cancel. Also, there will be a separate charge through AOL for their service. This service is completely independent than anything Green Apple charges and Green Apple has no responsibility or influence on this charge.

This document will assume you have already installed a copy of AOL via a CD or off the internet and have signed up with them for either a trial or full term account.

Configuring AOL to work with Green Apple

  1. Open AOL. You should be presented with the sign on screen.
  2. Click on the Setup Button.
  3. Click on Add Modem.
  4. After AOL is done searching, select TCP/IP: LAN or ISP (Internet Service Provider). Hit Next.
  5. Uncheck the Sign on to America Online Now! box. Hit Next.
  6. This will take you back to your sign on screen. It should now say ISP/LAN Connection in the select location box.

You should now be set. To get started, you will need to get connected through your Green Apple connection and then bring up AOL. Sign on as normal and if everything goes well, you should establish your connection to AOL. When ready to quit AOL, shut down AOL as normal and then disconnect from your Green Apple connection.
