Green Apple News: Buffer Overrun In Windows RPC Interface

July 16, 2003

Microsoft has issued notice of a severe security flaw in Windows. The flaw involves the RPC interface, the software component which handles remote procedure calls. It affects Windows NT 4.0, NT 4.0 Terminal Server, 2000, XP, and Server 2003. The flaw could allow an intruder the ability to gain local system privileges, such as installing programs or viewing and modifying data.

Microsoft has made a patch available to close the security hole and strongly recommends users download and install it. The patch is available using Windows Update at
  http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

For more information about the flaw, please see

Windows Update, the facility through which the fix is distributed, is widely used by Microsoft to distribute updates to Windows users. For good Windows maintenance, users should become familiar with Windows Update and run it at a regular intervals.

If you need help installing the patch, please contact us.
