| Green Apple News: Multi-tiered Email Configuration | |||||
| July 8, 2003
Email is critical to users of the Internet. Hardware failure, spam and today's email volume all put strains upon the proper functioning of an email-handling system. In response, Green Apple has completed the deployment of a multi-tier email architecture, providing users higher performance, security and robustness in our email system. The first tier receives emails from the Internet and performs spam filtering and light virus filtering. The second tier processes outbound email, providing light virus-filtering. The third tier resides behind a firewall and is used to securely store user mailboxes. Each tier is made up of machines and software to provide transparent fall-over in the event of overload or failure -- imagine having a car that had not only a spare tire but the capability to change a flat. Besides providing a high degree of fault-tolerance, the architecture allows for additional units to be installed at a tier, giving it a high-level of scalability. |
