Green Apple News: Faster Surfing With V.92

June 21, 2002

Green Apple has completed the deployment of V.92. V.92 is the latest and fastest modem protocol standard. V.92 improves the quality and throughput of a modem connection and introduces three new features: Modem-on-hold, PCM Upstream, and Quick Connect.

Our preliminary tests on V.92 have shown it makes a good improvement to transfer rates in general and an outstanding improvement on text transfers. V.44, the new compression technology bundled with V.92, allows for a 6 to 1 text compression. With a maximum V.92 connect speed and V.44 data compression, it is possible to achieve better than a 300Kbps rate on certain transfers -- and our testing has shown rates significantly higher than that.

Regarding the new features of V.92, Modem-on-hold enables the modem to stay connected, ‘on hold,' while you take an incoming call or initiate an outgoing call (Modem-on-hold requires the phone line have call-waiting service from the telephone company). This feature is very exciting and will enable users to better manage the sharing of their voice and data calling and will ultimately help to lower the overall cost of usage by making unnecessary a second phone line for those who have needed two, one for voice, one for Internet. Unfortunately, many modem suppliers are not yet ready with software which enables this feature; we strongly believe this will improve over the coming months.

PCM Upstream raises the maximum upstream rate. Unfortunately there does not yet seem to be standardization around the feature among modem manufacturers. Although we believe PCM Upstream will mature, at the present time the feature is not effective in raising the upstream rate. The remaining new feature, Quick Connect, shortens the time it takes to make a connection by remembering the phone line characteristics and storing them for later use, cutting down the time for the modem handshake (the noise you hear at the start of a modem session) by up to half. Our preliminary tests show Quick Connect feature only slightly lowers the connect time.

If your modem is software upgradeable, we would recommend that you upgrade to V.92: it will improve the performance of web and email activity, provide a more reliable connection, and connect slightly faster. Even if you have a phone connection which is unable to connect at 56K rates due to line noise, a V.92 modem will still deliver V.44 improvement. To find out if your modem is upgradeable and what the steps are to upgrading you can check with your pc or modem manufacturer. Manufacturers who have upgrades available generally have them posted on their websites. Or give Green Apple a call, we'd be glad to help!
