| Green Apple News: MyDoom.B Variant | |||||
| January 29, 2004
Just three days after the Internet world felt the first effects of the MyDoom virus, a variant of the virus, MyDoom.B, has been discovered. MyDoom is already be counted among the worst viruses ever. The virus is contained in an email attachment which infects the host machine when opened. Once infected, the worm emails itself to addresses found in address books, cached webpages, and other documents. The worm is clogging email systems on computers around the world. Opening the attachment will install a backdoor in the victim's computer allowing an attacker full access to that computer. MyDoom.B adds a Denial of Service attack on Microsoft.com, new subject lines, and an attempt to overwrite a victim's computer host file to prevent the user from accessing Microsoft's and anti-virus providers' websites. In an effort to lower the risk of infection for our users, Green Apple is blocking emails having the worm’s signature; however, the signature has a large variability in subject, body and From: address. All users are urged to follow good virus-avoidance regimens, including not opening unexpected email or email attachments and keeping up-to-date on their antivirus application. If you believe your computer is infected and could use help, please do not hesitate to give us a call. As always, Green Apple users are welcome to bring in their machines for virus scans and virus removals. Related Links For more
